Beaverton, Ore – On Thursday, employees at VTech Communications, Inc.’s San Antonio distribution center will achieve five years without a recordable accident (including stitches, prescriptions, broken bones or work restrictions) or lost work time. VTech Communications, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of VTech Holdings Ltd. (HKSE: 303), is the largest U.S. cordless phone manufacturer and an industry leader that delivers full-featured products at accessible prices. The San Antonio site averages 8,500 shipments per week across the company’s phone, toys and baby monitor product lines. It is the VTech’s only U.S. distribution facility.
“We want to make certain that those who are working with us know that we care,” said Laura Christiansen , vice president of human resources, VTech Communications, Inc. “A safe employee environment is a top priority at VTech. The team that works in our San Antonio warehouse has a strong sense of pride in their achievement and we are very proud of this accomplishment.” VTech’s U.S. president and several vice presidents will travel to San Antonio to celebrate this accomplishment with the team.
In the past five years, the San Antonio staff has worked more than one million hours with no recordable or lost time injuries. These hours were accumulated with an average of 79 employees staffing the facility during that time. Prior to the current safety milestone, the previous safety record was 687 days, or slightly less than two years, in its 12-year history.
All San Antonio employees are actively involved in the distribution center’s safety practices. Efforts include on-site training for all warehouse employees with extra time invested in training forklift operators, who are certified on relevant equipment. Written and hands-on tests are administered on-site prior to certification and licensing. Safety banners around the facility and walking lanes for pedestrian traffic help to keep important hazards and safe habits at the forefront of employees’ minds. As the facility grows, a dedicated safety committee assigns members to inspect all areas of the facility and produce written reports for optimization and corrective action.
